England & Wales to Southern Ireland
Ferry options from England & Wales can be divided into two categories, long sea and short sea. Short sea options all go from the port of Holyhead, which is at the most north westerly port in Wales.
Short sea ferry options
Services from Wales to Southern Ireland are provided by two ferry operators. Stena Line operate a very comprehensive service from Dublin to Holyhead, departing up to 4 times per day on modern ro-pax ships. Stena Lineservices from Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead are restricted to 1 daily sailing with only small vans accepted on this route. This route only operates during summer periods.
Irish Ferries is the second operator providing a ferry service from Dublin into England (via Wales). There are 2 sailings per day on a conventional ro-pax ferry and up to 2 crossings per day on a fast craft. Commercial vehicles are limited to 10m on the fast craft vessel.
Port services in Holyhead are very good, with café, toilets and rest rooms available.
Long sea ferry routes
Seatruck ferries operate a once daily service from Heysham (10m west of Lancaster) to Dublin. Although these ships only accommodate 12 commercial drivers, they offer excellent levels of service and value for money.
Seatruck ferries also operate two very modern ships sailing between Liverpool and Dublin. These freight vessels carry 12 commercial drivers in a very high standard of accommodation, including single berth cabins with TV’s.
Stena Line operate a twice daily service from the port of Fishguard to the Southern Ireland port of Rosslare. The port of Fishguard is located some 105km west of Swansea. Onboard services for commercial drivers are to a very high standard.
Irish Ferries sail from Pembroke, and offer a twice daily service to the Irish port of Rosslare. Pembroke is 90km west of Swansea, and is one of the oldest recorded ports in South Wales. Freight drivers shipping with Irish Ferries on this route will enjoy a very high standard of service onboard.
