France to the United Kingdom ferry crossings
France is located in western Europe and shares borders with several countries including Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Spain and Andorra. France is connected to England via the Channel Tunnel, which passes below the English Channel. France is the largest country within the European Union in terms of size.
There is a large range of ferry options between England and France, provided by several different ferry operators. These can be divided into short sea ferry crossings and long sea ferry crossings.
Most short sea ferry routes operate from the Port of Dover.
DFDS Seaways provide a sailing from Dover to Dunkerque every 2 hours. A crossing from Dover to Calais is offered by both P&O (23 times a day, 1 hour and 30 minutes) and Seafrance (15 times a day, 1 hour and 15 minutes).
Alternatively customers can travel via Eurotunnel to Calais from Folkestone. Eurotunnel crossings take roughly 35 minutes and there can be up to nine trains an hour during peak periods.
Long sea ferry crossings to France are also known as Western Channel ferry crossings operating from ports in the South West of England into the Western regions of France.
Brittany Ferries offers several crossings from Portsmouth travelling to St Malo (7 times a week, 10 hours and 45 minutes), Caen (3 times a day, 5 hours and 45 minutes) and Cherbourg (3 times a day, 3 hours). Brittany Ferries also depart from Plymouth to Roscoff (8 times a week, 5 hours and 30 minutes) and Poole to Cherbourg (6 times a week, 6 hours).
LD Lines provides differing Western Channel freight ferry routes from Portsmouth to Le Havre (daily) and Newhaven to Dieppe (twice a day) with crossing times between 4 and 7 hours.
Condor Ferries offers fast ferry crossings from St Malo to Poole (7 times a week, 5 hours), Cherbourg to Portsmouth (once a week, 5 hours and 30 minutes) and St Malo to Weymouth (7 times a week, 8 hours and 15 minutes). These crossings are predominately for passenger traffic and only carry small vehicles.
