England to the Isle of Wight ferry services
The Isle of Wight is a county and the largest island of England, situated in the English Channel, 3 to 5 miles off the south coast of the county of Hampshire. In the past, the Isle of Wight has been part of Hampshire however in 1890 it became an independent administrative county.
The ferry operator Wightlink provide regular crossings from England to the island. For customers travelling from Portsmouth, services are provided to Fishbourne (35 sailings a day taking approximately 40 minutes) and Ryde (33 sailings a daily with a 22 minute crossing). Alternatively, if you want to travel from Lymington a ferry service is available to Yarmouth 26 times a day (approximately a 30 minute crossing).
The Isle of Wight has a total of 787 km of roadway. Major roads run between the main island towns, with smaller roads connecting villages. It is one of the few counties in the UK not to have a motorway, although there is a dual carriageway from Coppins Bridge in Newport towards the north of Newport near the island’s hospital and prison.
