The port of Aberdeen, according to the Guinness book of records, is the oldest port in Britain. Freight volumes through the port of Aberdeen grew dramatically during the 1980's and 1990's, with the additions of grain terminals and transit sheds. Further developments saw the introduction of roll on roll off berths, accommodation ferry services and deep sea berths to accommodate larger lift on lift off vessels, up to 165m in length and 26m beam. Today, the port handles 4 million tonnes of cargo annually. Roll-on roll-off ferry services from Aberdeen go to the Shetland Islands and Orkney Islands.
Scrabster lies at the extreme north of the Scottish mainland close to the town of Thurso. It is an important fish landing port with good berthing facilities for fishing boats and a fish market. The port continues to develop with the modernisation of the fish market and the building of new deepwater quays, all serving to make Scrabster an important hub of activity for the whole highland region.
