From 1 Jan 2024, many EU freight vessels will be subject to a new ‘carbon tax’ - the Emissions Trading System (ETS) for shipping. As a result, ferry tickets will cost more.
The introduction of the new EU ETS for Shipping is part of the EU’s wider efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across industries. Under the new system, ferry operators will need to reduce their CO2 emissions each year for vessels over 5000 gross tonnage. The associated costs will lead to more expensive EU ferry tickets while greatly reducing the environmental impact of the freight industry.
We will be keeping you updated of any further operator updates ahead of the official ETS surcharge in Jan 2024.
