We are strengthening our Baltic Sea operations with the addition of three next-generation ro-pax vessels. These ships, part of the newly announced "Hansa Superstar" class, are tailored for the Finland–Germany route and represent a significant step in fleet renewal focused on sustainability and passenger comfort.
The vessels are a part of Grimaldi Group's extensive, nine vessel newbuilding programme. Built by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard (Weihai), the Finnlines vessels, sailing under the Finnish flag, are equipped with engines capable of running on methanol, making them ready to achieve the "Net Zero Emission" goal. Optimized hull and propeller designs, energy-efficient onboard power management systems (both at sea and in port), shore power readiness and the application of silicon-based hull coatings will reduce CO₂ emissions per transported cargo unit by more than 50% compared to vessels currently operating on the same routes.
With delivery expected between 2028 and 2029, the 240-metre ships will offer 5,100 lane metres for ro-ro freight, space for 90 cars, and accommodation for up to 1,100 passengers in 320 cabins.
Inspired by Finnlines' existing Superstar-class ships (Finnsirius and Finncanopus), the new vessels are optimized for longer Baltic crossings. They feature expanded cabin options and diverse dining experiences, along with five bars and restaurants, a spa with Finnish sauna, shops, and family-friendly play areas. A standout feature is a panoramic bar on deck 12, offering sweeping views of the Baltic Sea.
These new builds reflect Finnlines' commitment to eco-friendly, high-quality maritime transport in Northern Europe.
"These new ships are the result of a thorough study of our customers' needs and the future of shipping," said Emanuele Grimaldi, Managing Director of the Grimaldi Group and Chairman of the Board of Finnlines. "They offer quality, efficiency and environmental sustainability – core elements to remain a leader in short-sea transport in the Baltic region."
