Belfast City Council Approves New £9 million Logistics Hub

Did you know that Belfast Harbour is 175 years old?

Seeing more than two thirds of all Northern Ireland’s sea freight (including both imports and exports), the maritime hub is expected to receive a £9m upgrade due to the demands of increasing RoRo traffic.

So, what upcoming changes can we expect to see at Belfast Harbour, and why is the port so essential?

Let’s find out.

Belfast Harbour

Belfast’s premier port serves as the main marine entry point and logistical centre for Northern Ireland, as well as a growing portion of the Republic of Ireland's economy.

It is ideally situated adjacent to the highway system off Junction 1 of the M2 highway and provides quick access to and from the rest of Ireland and Belfast city centre.

With RoRo traffic at Belfast Harbour consistently rising, a new logistics hub is set to be built on the premises.

What benefits will the new project bring?

The project, which will see the development of a new (50,000 sq ft) warehouse, aims to tackle three major issues head-on:

  1. Sustainability

  2. Connectivity;

  3. Increased demand

According to a statement from Port Director Michael Robinson:

“The decision to proceed with this project at the heart of the port was driven by both an increase in customer demand, and the desire from logistics and supply chain businesses to improve connectivity and increase sustainability through reduced mileage…”

What does the new project involve?

Having received planning permission from Belfast City Council, Belfast Harbour will be able to build a new logistics warehouse.

It will be situated on Westbank Road in the Harbour Estate, adjacent to the port's RoRo ferry terminals, giving the occupier unparalleled operational efficiency for freight moving to and from the UK and other countries.

The construction of the new 50,000 square foot warehouse will cost £9 million and will feature 17 loading docks, over 40 HGV parking spots, high efficiency refrigerated and ambient warehouse space, and parking for both automobiles and bicycles.

The addition will ensure that Belfast continues to be a vital trade link for those transporting goods between Northern Ireland and the UK.
